US General Consulate's Invitation to a Mural Painting Unveiling

Invited by Mr. Mark Pannel, US Consul for Press and Culture - General Consulate Rio de Janeiro - I went to ACBEU (Brazil - United States Association) to take part of the 70th ACBEU's anniversary celebration whose one of the activities was the unveiling of a mural painting. This mural had been painted by young African-American artist Chanel Compton in collaboration with Bahian public school students. The painting was great and it presented clear Bahian cultural references. This event was also meaningful because students involved in the painting belong to a program sponsored by the US Embassy via ACBEU. This program called ACCESS gives lower class students the opportunity to study English as a second language.

May 25, 2011: Africa Day – In order to celebrate this date, we had the 4th Africa Day event at Escola Parque. I was one of the speakers invited as I have a Specialization on African-Brazilian Social and Cultural History. My lecture was based on the essay “Black Religion: Core Emphasis and Orientations", by Gayraud Wilmore. I had the access to this essay through the excellent book you have donated, among many others, to the Escola Parque: “Essays on African-American History, Culture and Society", by William SCOTT & William SHADE. There were about 200 teachers at Escola Parque auditorium and I could talk about the African American history from the Africans’ arrival in the British colonies in 1619 to the 21st century, but, of course, I had to guide and delimitate my lecture and time, focusing on the principles of the black religion, accordingly to Mr. Wilmore: survival, elevation and liberation. It was fantastic and the audience reaction was grateful!!! This event was very meaningful as we had the presence of the well-known linguistics professor Ms. Yêda Pessoa de Castro, Doctor in African Languages – Zaire National University, who gave us a wonderful lecture on African languages influence in our Portuguese.

May 12, 2011: English Teachers’ workshop at Escola Parque
I have attended the Public School Teachers’ Development Program (PSTDP) sponsored by the US Embassy in partnership with ACBEU and Secretaria de Educação do Estado da Bahia, reason why I had the chance to multiply what I have seen at ACBEU with English teachers that work for Escola Parque Center. But I was not the only facilitator involved in the event: I invited two PSTDP colleagues that work at Escola Parque to present the event with me as well. The discussion was completely made in English which is something not so common for us public school English teachers and the themes of the meeting were "Language Teachers as Language Learners" and "Learning Styles", both themes were selected from the first chapters of the book "From Language Learner to Language Teacher – An Introduction to Teaching English as Foreign Language", by Don Snow – PSTDP book we have used at ACBEU. Teachers loved the meeting and certainly it served to increase our self-esteem as public school English teachers: we talked about the important role teachers of English as a foreign language play during students’ learning process, due to the fact that we know a lot about our students’ strengths and weaknesses, being able to help them efficiently in this regard.

On April 28, we had a meeting at Escola Parque at the Nucleus of New Technologies where I work. The theme discussed was the social networking sites with emphasis on their educational use and the necessary etiquettes such a usage requires. I was invited to talk about the social networking sites I have used to establish the exchange with the Lovejoy Technology Academy (Brooklyn, Illinois, USA). I gave the audience examples of the sites I have used in my classes, such as: Edmodo, Tapped In, Orkut, Blogger and Skype. There were about 200 people (among teachers and school staff) during this event.

• A bookcase for your donations I asked the Escola Parque principal to put a bookcase inside my classroom so that your book donations could be displayed there. He did so. Now we have a wonderful bookcase there with the books donated. Students and English teachers can have access to such materials if they want.

As you can see, any chances I have to multiply what I learn and the experiences I have had I do it. I like to be proactive.

No dia 10 de novembro de 2010, a Escola Parque, através do Prof. Tyrone Santiago-, teve a honra de receber representantes da Embaixada Americana para uma visita oficial. Estando em Salvador para participar de compromissos profissionais, a comitiva resolveu visitar-nos para obter maiores informações em torno de como tem sido o trabalho do Prof. Tyrone no que tange à divulgação de suas experiências na viagem aos EUA.
A Srª Tara Rougles, Oficial para Assuntos Culturais da Embaixada dos EUA em Brasília; o Sr. Mark Pannel, Cônsul e Diretor da Seção de Imprensa, Educação e Cultura no Rio de Janeiro foram alguns dos integrantes da comitiva americana. Uma vez na Escola, eles puderam conhecer nossos núcleos; o projeto Global Connections, em parceria com a Lovejoy School (EUA) e obter um feedback do Prof. Tyrone a respeito de aspectos envolvendo o sistema educacional estadunidense e sobre voluntariado como uma importante contribuição possível daquele país para a cultura e para a educação brasileiras.
A partir desta visita, almeja-se mais e mais o estreitamento de laços entre Brasil e EUA nos campos da educação e da cultura, pondo-se o Projeto Global Connections, da Escola Parque, sempre a serviço destes objetivos.

Sobre a Viagem aos EUA - 20 de setembro a 08 de outubro de 2010

Após dois anos de intercâmbio virtual com Lovejoy School, quatro conferências sobre educação e tecnologia e um livro publicado, chegou a hora de um verdadeiro encontro presencial entre o pessoal daquela escola e eu. Deus estava lá para resolver este problema...

No início deste ano, a embaixada americana decidiu selecionar alguns profissionais brasileiros em Educação, a fim de promover um intercâmbio, através do qual esses profissionais pudessem ver como os EUA têm trabalhado com seu sistema educacional; compartilhando, em seguida, essa experiência no Brasil, após o retorno. Então, fui escolhido pelo consulado americano no Rio de Janeiro para representar o estado da Bahia. É claro que usei o projeto Global Connections como a minha ferramenta para ser selecionado pelo consulado dos EUA no Rio!
A viagem foi maravilhosa, porque a delegação brasileira pôde ir para quatro Estados Americanos e a capital, Washington DC. Nesses lugares, pudemos visitar várias escolas, faculdades e organizações sem fins lucrativos. Pudemos também ter a oportunidade de ver o modo de vida americano, visitando e jantando com três famílias americanas. O momento mais especial ainda ocorreria, no entanto...

Durante a visita a Dallas, Texas, passei pelo momento mais lindo e emocionante da viagem: quando entrei no saguão do hotel em Dallas, vindo de Vermont, tive a surpresa de ver o pessoal da Lovejoy lá: Professora Cathy McDonald, Dr. Raelynn Parks e quatro estudantes de Lovejoy (Maya, Derrick, Kathryn e Domingos). O grupo exibia um banner com uma foto minha e com o logotipo do projeto; mouse pad, garrafa de água, e T-shirts também tinham a mesma impressão!!! Foi muito emocionante para mim ver aquilo. É claro que aquele momento foi mágico e inesquecível!

Agradeço a Deus por ter tido esta parceria com a Escola de Lovejoy, por ter uma amizade verdadeira e profissionalmente frutífera com a Sra. Cathy McDonald e por ser capaz de estabelecer um contato entre estudantes americanos e brasileiros!
